TortoiseSVN 1.4.5 caused Windows Explorer hang

I'm using TortoiseSVN on Windows XP SP2. SVN and TSVN version 1.4.5.
The repository is a filesystem (no server) on my own computer. I'm
learning
how to use SVN/TSVN and had created two working directories
and checked out the same files into both. I made different
changes in the same file in each and then committed them
one after the other to see how merging worked. I did this
several times, trying different change scenarios. Somewhere
in the process Windows Explorer got slower and slower
till it became useless and I had to restart Windows.

It's only happened once so far, but I had a lot of stuff
going and it was a pain to have to restart everything from
scratch.

I see others have reported this problem earlier this year.
Is there any solution besides changing the Icon overlay
status cache mode?

If the hang happens again I see it's also possible to kill
the TSVNCache process.
