Do you have your working copies on your local harddrive? If not, then as
the warning tells you as soon as you activate the overlays for network
drives: the performance *will* decrease!

I can't think of any reason (besides hardware problems) why the cache
could bring a system to such a halt when crawling local working copies
(on a network share, that's different: your network will get hammered
and the system can get to a halt if that happens).

Anyway, there are a few things you can try:
* as mentioned, use the debug tray icon and check the paths it crawls
   - if its always the same paths over and over again, then there's
something special with your working copy that makes the cache loop and I
have to find out what exactly that 'special' is.
* a fresh checkout of your working copy could also help: if the working
copy is corrupt, then the cache process might end up in a loop too.
