Why .svn directory appears on each subdirectory

Hello,

i'm new to subversion. And i'm new to tortoisesvn. The both are the great things.

Before i tried tortoisesvn, i mentioned that a checkout create only one .svn directory on the root directory of the checkout. (One .svn directory per project)

Why does tortoisesvn creates .svn directory in each subdirectory of the project?
Is it possible to turn it off? I don't like so many .svn directories in my working copy.

Thanks for answers
Igor
