Agreed. But I'd forgo the icon overlays. They frequently fail to be
updated correctly anyway, even when there are local changes. They either
remain green checkmarks or just disappear completely, at least for me. I
haven't found the root cause why.

That's the basic idea, although you can't be sure UDP packets will get
through. And it does tend to get away from the simple mode of operation we
have now.
The more I think about this, the more I see how hard it might be to
implement efficiently, because of the collaboration needed between server
and client. So maybe it can't be done.
Anyway, thanks to everyone who contributed ideas and helped me to think
about this problem.
