First, get rid of the files on the shared network drive. If you use
Subversion, there's no need to 'backup' the files you're working on. You
should then keep them locally (otherwise you'll get performance
problems, and also other problems).

It's not a question whether you 'need' Apache or not. I don't know why
most people think Apache is some big monster which isn't worth
installing 'just for that'. Apache is not that big, and the installation
is done in 2 minutes.
Configuring Apache with Subversion isn't that difficult either: just
read our docs - we have a step-by-step guide in there on what you have
to do. If you follow all the steps there (including setting up SSL
encryption) it will take you about an hour (maybe two if you have a slow
internet connection: you need to download some stuff).
