My company has just switched to using Subversion (from Visual SourceSafe)
and is using TortoiseSVN on the developer's desktop PCs. While everyone is
pleased to see the back of SourceSafe, we are having some problems which
seem to be down to TortoiseSVN.
The symptoms are intermittent freezes of the Windows Explorer. During this
time, all Explorer windows and the taskbar hang. After a short wait,
Explorer comes back to life again. The problem started when TortoiseSVN was
installed, and stops when it is uninstalled, so it is the main suspect.
We currently have a few people using TortoiseSVN and it's affecting people
to a different level. One person suffers frequent hangs, almost every time
he touches an Explorer window, which can last a minute at a time. We've
tried switching off icon overlays to see if it helps, but it didn't seem to
make any difference. This user has Windows XP on his desktop, and keeps his
working copy on a network drive.
However I'm not having any problems with it at all on my desktop, which is
Windows Vista Business with working copies kept on the local hard drive.
But in the recent past I have had TortoiseSVN installed on my home machine -
Windows XP X64 with working copy on the local drive - and did see occasional
hangs.
The pattern does seem quite random, and we're confused. Does anyone have
any suggestions for things we can try to fix this problem? We're accessing
the repository over HTTP, the server is Apache on Windows 2003. We're using
TortoiseSVN 1.4.3. Any suggestions to keep my co-worker tearing his hair
out gratefully received!
