Subfolders of a top-folder-only directory

I used the Option "Only checkout the top folder" at my checkout:
http://tortoisesvn.sourceforge.net/docs/release/TortoiseSVN_en/apbs03.html

The documentation seems to be outdated:
> If either of these options are checked, you will have
> to perform updates to your working copy using
> TortoiseSVN -> Update to Revision...
> instead of TortoiseSVN -> Update.
> The standard update will include all sub-folders
> and all externals.

Both versions ignored the Subfolder.
I hoped to see the Subfolders with
TortoiseSVN -> Check for Modifications and a "Check repository"-click:
http://tortoisesvn.sourceforge.net/docs/release/TortoiseSVN_en/apbs03.html

But I had to use the command line "svn up subfoldername"
to checkout the subfolder.
