Did you get an error message?
Did you uncheck the "stop on copy" checkbox in the dialog and then click
on "Show All"?

After uninstalling 1.4.0 beta, did you check that there's no files left
in c:\program files\TortoiseSVN (or whatever place you installed it to)?
