network traffic on obtaining/releasing locks

Hello!

I'm using TortoiseSVN 1.3.1, Build 5521 - 32 Bit on WinXP.

When locking a folder, which contains 340 files, Tortoise shows me that the network traffic was 828 kB. Unlocking same folder takes 920 kB of traffic.

Though, if I do not just release lock, but commit some changes (that involves unlocking too), the traffic counts only a few kilobytes.

Can someone explain me 1) why it takes so much of network traffic to get/release locks, and 2) why then releasing with a commit takes much lesser?

Sincerely yours,
Ivan
