icon overlays and link to repository

I turned my computer on this morning, and the first thing I noticed was
that all the folders I had checked out last week didn't have the icon
overlay. I tried opening the explorer, but there was no 'update' or
'commit' option either. Does this mean the link to the repository has
somehow been broken? How do I go about fixing it?

I checked out a new copy and the icon overlays still did not show, but I
did have the option to update or commit.

I've checked the help and tried settings>icon overlays>show overlay
icons recursively
