 From what I heard, the plan is to release svn 1.8 during the subversion
hackathon in Berlin which happens June 10 - June 14.

I'd like to create the 1.8 branch sometime next week.

Yes, please file an issue for this before you start working on it.

We've discussed this before: we should stick with the current versioning
scheme.
