Not unusable: hit ctrl-alt-delete, start the task manager. then in the
file menu, choose "run" and enter "c:\windows\explorer.exe".
that will start a new instance of the explorer, and since there isn't
another explorer.exe process, the desktop will start again.

Usually, yes. But if we change the protocol between the shell dll and
the status cache, you'll get crashes. Sure, that doesn't happen very
often, but it's not impossible.
