Very good point.
 
Though I must confess to quite regularly missuse TortoiseMerge as a text editor. :-)

Then I would like to re-state my point about being able to edit temporary files. It's IMHO absolutely no biggie, and maybe even not worth the effort, but could prevent beginners in the habit of editing files in TortoiseMerge from accidently loosing work by making changes to and save a temporary file:
