I tried that but it didn't work out quite as well:
First, the triangles suggest directions and users may be tempted
to click them (and nothing will happen). Secondly, it does not
solve the problem because the ellipses, for instance, can become
almost circles when path information must be shown.

This is what I did in r15298: Make the squares smaller by 1/8th
and push them slightly further to the center. For 1-line nodes they
are now always within or on the outline of the node but may still
be shown entirely outside for many-line nodes.

One could center the markers vertically to fix this problem.
However, they would potentially overlay with path names.
