I don't think it was intentional, but actually (given new information I did not
have when I first posted) it may be an issue with a (quite expensive) CAD tool
that uses hooks into the non-Tortoise SVN.

We've already had one, and we'll be having more. I have a suspicion that the
(professional trainer) guy who did the training wasn't really picking up on the
distinction between software engineers, other engineers and managers. Though in
fairness to him, I know our IT people chose to arrange a single session at which
some representatives of all three groups were trained together.

Yes, but we have a couple of "sandbox" repositories on a server for that, which
has the benefit that they can't get panicked about the (possibility that there
may be) differences between local and remote behaviour.
