That's easily solved by chosing the 'US-international' keyboard
layout: it gives you 'dead' keys (like ~ ' " ^ and `) that can then be
combined with letters (like n a e i o u etc.) without having to
remember 120+ alt combinations :-)

(and to use the 'dead' keys themselves, press them twice or combine
them with space).
