I've installed TortoiseSVN 1.4.7 during the previous week on 2 computers
running Windows XP Professional SP2 and Windows Vista Ultimate, and a virtual
machine running Windows 2000 Professional SP4 (all English versions).
After that I've noticed serious slowdowns (about 1 to 10 seconds) when browsing
through folders on my local drives. The slowdown was more noticable when I was
browsing through SVN working copies. Opening "My Computer" folder took up me to
60 seconds, during which the Explorer was frozen.
The Subversion server (version 1.4.3) was installed on one of this computers
running Windows XP Professional SP2.
The problem appeared just like a problem with HDDs, and actually the slowdowns
appeared on both 2 SATA HDDs I have (WD 250 GB and Hitachi 400 GB, both SATAII).
I've checked both of my HDDs with Hitachi Drive Fitness Test utility but it
haven't reported any problems.
I'm usually using Total Commander to browse my file system but the problem
appeared when using Windows Explorer as well. I then noticed that unchecking
the "Show overlay icons, e.g. for links" option (Configuration-Display-Icons)
fixed the performance problem.
I've upgraded my subversion server binaries (on WinXP SP2 PC) to the version
1.4.6 but the problem continued to appear.
I've also tried the the "Rebuild icons" option in the Microsoft TweakUI Power
Toy but it hasn't fixed the problem.
I've rebooted to the safe mode in WinXP and browsing speed had restored to
normal speed.
Uninstalling of TortoiseSVN 1.4.7 from all these computers fixed the
performance problem.
I've installed version 1.4.6 on all these computers yesterday and the problem
seemed to disappear. But I'm experiencing the same problem today on my Windows
XP SP2 computer with version 1.4.6.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
