This depends on the country you are in. But afaik at least all over
Europe and north America it is like this. That's why you often see on
the main product something like: (c) 2004-7, by The Company.

Because in this example the product includes copyrighted material from
between 2004 till 2007.

You get the "right to copy" something from the moment on you wrote or
said something. And from then on you have it normally for 70 or 75
years. So as long as you didn't change something, you do not have a new
version and therefore the new right.
