So the error message:

is wrong. It's actually due to the version of SVN installed. Sounds like a bug to me.

Thanks for the help, but I've just found that the developer concerned was in the habit of manually copying files and deleting them from the old folder.

I've found that I can see the log for the folder which includes log items for the deleted file, and I can get old versions of deleted files OK.
