In fact it could be worth making the default size a little bigger too.

There could still be some use in a preview box in this dialog which
displays the full message text to help you select between similar ones.

Why does nobody like that button? OK, the margins around it were a bit
tight originally, but it's just a button. How should it get prettier?

I think the confusion is between "Commit message" and "Committed
message" in the user's head. S/he thinks (without bothering to look)
that these are messages already committed.

I have no problem with this; I just can't see why it is important.

Isn't that bad GUI to put a label beside a button? In HEAD I believe the
button is bigger and has a "recent messages" caption, and a more verbose
hint.

... and advise users to upgrade to a 1600x1200 monitor to display these
hints ;-) Just the excuse I need ...
