Ok, I tried that, and it seems to be working now.
I don't remember exactly which version I had installed
previously; I believe it was several months old. I've
never attempted to downgrade an installation before or
anything like that -- I've only ever installed the
latest version over the top of previous versions. One
thing that was strange though, when I went to
uninstall TortoiseSVN to downgrade this morning (after
I installed 1.2.4 and had the shell problems) windows
listed two copies. Not sure if that's useful
information to you, but it seems like some pair of
versions that have been released in the past six
months or so aren't playing nice when you try to
upgrade.
