The warning is there only for users convenience. It's not even reliable
as you already have noticed in that it only checks for "/tags/" in the
URL to be used in a commit.

I'm not sure if that feature is important enough to have it
configurable. What do others think? Where should we even place this
option in the settings dialog? How would it look like?
