As you mentioned before: RTFM.

The overlays *never* reflect a status corresponding to HEAD. That
would require to contact the repository. Now think about it: the
explorer would basically become unusable if the repository is e.g.
accessible over a slow modem.

To see the status against HEAD, use the "check for modifications" dialog.
But even then: you only will see that you're not in HEAD - you won't
see any modifications.
