Well, possible is almost everything. The question is if that's something
we should even do.

Yes, this would require a round trip to the repository for *every*
folder shown. Now imagine you expand a folder which contains another 100
folders - time to get a cup of coffee before the folder shows its
contents. And no, an option wouldn't help either: you shouldn't be able
to check an option which renders the program not responding for minutes.
