One apr patch is to get rid of the APR_ICONV_PATH env variable which
causes big problems. The other was to not have yet another iconv lib
(which in fact does the very same thing as the apr iconv).
That's not quite the same - I didn't wanted to ship the same thing twice.

The spellchecker and thesaurus are responsible for about 3MB of the
whole installer. That's about 35%, not 50%.

Not really: we then had to either wait indefinitely until all the
translators catched up, or release every two days an updated
installer.
