I'm skeptical that handling and administering 500+ separate repositories is easier than one or two.

I don't see the revision number itself as being representative of anything significant in the context of a single project. They are
useful for locating something in the repository, but I don't see the fact that rev 47 might refer to one project and rev 48 to
another to be particularly meaningful.

Well, since each backup undoubtedly has some overhead, I don't think the sum of 500+ smaller backups, with 500+ repititions of that
overhead will be smaller than one or two big ones.
