You should also upgrade your subversion server. 1.0.2 is quite old and
there were definite performance issues, although that may have been more
to do with http access. But it may have some bearing on the slow
checkout performance. 1.1.4 is the latest released version, and 1.2.0
will be released in the next couple of weeks (we hope).

If you find out what is causing the performance degradation, do let us
know so we can add it to our general store of answers.
