No real harm, yes. But I do find it handy, becuase if I have a conflict
and try to compile in my WC I'll get weird syntax errors, the cause of
which (the <<<< markers) isn't always obvious. Yes, to get a conflict
you'd have to use merge or update, which will tell you about the
conflicts, but those can sometimes be missed/forgotten about in a big
merge or update.

Otherwise I agree completely with everything you said.
