My understanding is that, technically, it can.
What makes you think that it's impossible?

Fair enough, sorry.
I know and appreciate very much all the hard work that the SVN devs
has put into keeping SubVersion a sound design.
I'll rephrase it.
How about: "That seems to be a very fragile design"?
