Well, for the beginning/intermediate/professional c++ windows
programmer I would recommend: "Programming Windows with MFC" by Jeff
Prosise (at least for Visual C++ 6.0). This has a really nice chapter
on COM, Active X and such. I don't know wether the current version is
updated to cover the changes in VS.NET.

For the more esoteric parts of C++ I would recommend
Bjarne Stroustrups book "The C++ programming language".

Also have a look at the "Thinking in ..." series by Bruce Eckel
(http://mindview.net/Books/TICPP/ThinkingInCPP2e.html).

A book which I haven't read, but which might be of interest for
library writers is:
"Modern C++ Design: Generic Programming and Design Patterns Applied"
By Andrei Alexandrescu (AW).
