I tried this already without a yellow background, but the green arrow alone
just disappeared on the background icon.

I know, I like that shape as well and I'm not too happy with having the same
basic shape (circle) three times. OTOH I hope that I can place a well
distinguishable high-contrast symbol on that shape so that the symbolic
language is clear.

I want to have everything: symbol, contrast, colour
In Subversion: white tick on green circle (bright on dark)
Modified: Green arrow on yellow circle (dark on bright)
Conflict 1: White / yellow exclamation mark on red circle/square (bright on
dark)
Conflict 2: Black exclamation mark on orange / red circle/square (dark on
bright)
Conflict 3: Yellow / white triangle on red circle/square (bright on dark)

Cheers
