Much of the terrible performance here has been caused by a bug. After
people have tried the fixed versions, we should probably review this design
decision again.

The state of the 'show unversioned' checkbox is currently persistent, so
even if we said 'showing unversioned is very slow', people might well still
find that they're stuck with waiting for it, because the checkbox had been
set last time they committed.

Let's just make it all fast!
