Currently the scenario goes like this:
1. Select Commit at the root of a large tree.
2. Spend a minute or two picking and choosing which files to commit
3. Click "Commit". The commit dialog dissapears, and a new "Commit
progress" dialog appears. It grinds away for a few seconds and complains
about needing to update, an unresolved conflict or some other problem.
4. User fixes whatever complaint caused the commit to fail, and chooses
Commit again.
5. User gets depressed about having to do "picking and choosing" all
over again. (Thankfully he can easily re-select old log message.)
If the main commit dialog didn't close when clicking "Commit", but
rather had the "progress commit" dialog as a child, and only closed if
the commit was successful it would be a big improvement. Admittedly
step 2 involving enough files (and your tree being in such a state that
you need to do so much picking and choosing) is not common, but it's
happend enough to me that I've wasted numerous minutes re-selecting
files. Even in the case of only a few files it would be better UI
behaviour anyway, IMHO.
Thoughts?
