I guess you're saying I could build it from source... Well, to be
honest, I have never installed anything on my machine that didn't come
from a nicely wrapped package. So I don't know if there are any
implications I should be aware of...

I left a comment at the bug list, asking if they are anywhere near the
solution to the problem. I will give it a few days and see if I get an
answer. Based on that I will consider your suggestion.
