Yes it is a preference and on the view menu.

Generally, it will work better if you show the folders. Technically those
folders are out of date and if you try to do something let sets props or
refactor the folder you will not be able to commit it. So this is a way
to make Synch update those folders.

That same Subversion problem affects this too. Try doing update on a
top-level folder and see if that updates that other folder.
