   Probably it should be possible to do something like that using plugin
fragments and somehow activate specific fragment...

   Not sure. But your approach seem reasonable. There is a huge UI style
document somewhere on Eclipse web site. I can find a link if you like...

   Anyways, I'll try to find somebody at Eclipse who might know the
answer and maybe even help with icons.
