Hi I reproduced the problems with a blank eclipse 3.1.2 installation (unzip from .zip archive) and an update-manager installation of subclipse.
I also tried to avoid spaces in the workspace directory.. Still eclipse tells me something about the read-only problem.
May this is an eclipse problem. However it is strange, that you cannot reproduce the problem on you system....
