Yes, there is. The workspace directory contains a .metadata
directory, a .svn directory, and all the individual project directories.
All the projects are in the same repository; checking them
out "one level up" allows the svn command line to be used
for cross-project commits, files moves, etc. At the time,
subclipse was unable to do such things.
The workspace directory does have an svn:ignore property
listing .metadata.
