Assuming there is a reliable way to detect when a folder is empty, then yes
it is technically possible. I am not sure it is worth the extra code
though. Subversion has plans to improve the checkout command so that it
can checkout into an existing folder. When that happens, we will be able
to make this more robust as Subversion will handle the details better.
There is a pretty good chance that this will feature will be in Subversion
1.4, which should hopefully be out in 6 months or so.
