Toni,
if you use the Navigator view, you can see and manage the .project,
.classpath and other . files related to Eclipse's operation. If, like most
people using Eclipse are doing mostly Java projects, the Package Explorer
view doesn't show any file beginning with a ..

For me the project catalog is the directory that
is created under workspace. Basically where the
checked out directory is placed.
If it was possbile to setup Eclipse so that it save project settings
in workspace/projectX instead of workspace/.metadata/.plugins...
So what I would like to do I guess it to put more of the unversioned
files into the project directory and version control them.
Then we could just add those file to subversion and when somebody
checked out the project all project settings would also be checked
out.
But the import/export might work well enough have to try and
experiment with them.
