thank you for your tips. I went to the repository, removed UID and PWD and it worked. Then I typed in the correct UID and PWD again (it was given there before it stopped working) THERE and it still is working. I don't know what the problem was (I think a typo in the PWD) but I'm happy that it is working now.

The problem is that you did not address my original suggestion. There is
nothing unique about the repository browser. The problem I described
would happen the same there as anywhere else.
You need to create a new connection where all you specify is the URL and
leave the username and password fields empty. If that exhibits the
problem then there is something to explore further.
