No.

You are not stuck with anything. It is easy to compile from source and
there are packages available for 1.2 as well. I run 1.2 on Hoary.

There is a branch. If someone wants to step up and maintain it, they are
free to have at it.

The JavaHL interface has changes in 1.2, it is not really reasonable to
expect products that have not even reached 1.0 status to try and support
old releases when we are trying to get our products released.
