Hi Duncan,
I had the same problem several Mac OS X boxen and had to switch the SVN
Interface in the Preferences pane. Basically, if I attempted to use the SVN
command line interface it would throw the exact error you mentioned. When I
switched to the Javahl one synchronization started working without a
problem.
I think at one point I knew why this was happening but apparently I did too
many drugs in the 60s in a past life and totally forget why now.
