So is the main benefit that all the translations are stored centrally
and if your application uses words and phrases that have already been
translated you essentially get those for free?

It seems like it would only be of value if it came with the
translations. I was thinking Babel created their own "language packs"
and you used some new API to get translations from them. That would
obviously be fairly invasive to use, but overall it seems like it
would better as you would only need to install one language pack.
