I think it is fair to ask whether it makes sense to introduce a fairly risky feature that adds marginal benefits into a mature and stable area of the code.

I question why we are even still introducing these new fsfs formats when the benefits are relatively small.

Build FSX, make it awesome then make it the default someday.

I am not going to block 1.9 over this but I wish we'd stop doing these sort of "improvements". In the past, I also thought we were against adding features that exposed a bunch of obscure configuration options as well.
