The testsuite itself is internally parallelized. I don't remember
what the magic options are to enable it, or if it is on by default,
but using -j for make check won't help.

(The reason we parallelize outside of 'make' is that we often run the
tests outside of 'make', and can take advantage of the parallelism in
those scenarios.)
