Thanks for the pointers!

I do think it's telling that the PartialClone page and issue haven't
been updated by hg devs since the beginning of 2006. While I suspect
that "partial checkout" wouldn't be too hard for them to implement
(and that's the only part that the hg devs addressed on the issue),
"partial clone" is the hard part, and it looks like their thinking is
still at the stage analogous to "we can just put in a bunch of
svn:mergeinfo props and it'll all work out"...
