Just for the record, I'm in favor of Mike's proposal too. I think I
could probably implement it pretty quickly. I'd like to finish #695
and friends first, but when I get a chance I'll file an issue for this
one (that'll be tomorrow evening -- feel free to beat me to it). This
shouldn't take too long, since checkout and update are really the same
thing under the hood.
