I did notice the --with-zlib support, but it doesn't yet support in-tree
compilation, and I wasn't aware that you were planning to add it (as
we've just discussed on IRC).

Reverted in r21464. I'm still not sure that it makes a lot of sense to
ship by default, but at least it won't be _completely_ pointless.
