Couldn't say it better myself:-) When we put out 1.4 prereleases, we
will have to include warnings that if you test this release, you can't
easily go back to use 1.3 on this working copy. This, and also the
fact that users who start using 1.4 when it is released might not be
able to mix that with other clients that haven't upgraded to the 1.4
libraries yet, is very annoying. I don't see a way around it, because
completely supporting old formats is a maintainanc nightmare, but we
should avoid bumping if possible.
